I have a 12-1/2-year-old son who is most interested in doing some strength training. I am a physician and much of the recent literature that I have reviewed says it is not necessary for youths to wait to do some form of strength training. Is there any service offered through your club that would address the need/desire for a young man such as this?
I'm glad to hear that your son has taken an interest in strength training. I would strongly recommend hiring a personal trainer to teach him how to safely and effectively create a training program. It is safe for a child of his age to begin strength training, but it is important that he is able to lift and control his own body weight. Learning proper foundations with good form is key before just throwing together a "hodge-podge" of machines. Along with using proper form and the right amount of weight, your son should also follow appropriate gym etiquette. A personal trainer or member services representative would be helpful in sharing the GAC policies, as well as proper gym etiquette.
